5. Report of the Seminar
Govt. College of Teacher Education,
Thiruvananthapuram hosted a one day seminar entitled “Emerging Concerns of
Gender, School and Society” on Friday, 6th
January2017. The main target group were
two batches of the Two Year MEd students of the college for whom the same area is a topic of the Self Development Course of the MEd programme. The seminar was funded by
the Directorate of Collegiate Education.
Registration for the seminar commenced at 9 AM
and by 10 AM participants had registered
for the programme. They included four guest students of the Department of
Education, University of Kerala.
Prior to the inaugural session the students
could view the Mini exhibition of
Gender-related resources displayed on
the corridor of the venue – the Seminar Hall.
Inaugural session
The seminar
commenced with a prayer. The Principal of Govt. CTE, Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. B.H.Helen Joy welcomed the gathering.
Dr.Theresa Susan A,
Head, Department of Education, University of Kerala, Thycaud,
Thiiruvananthapuram inaugurated the
seminar by officially launching
the Blog ‘Gender Quest 2017’ .
This was followed by briefing of the
seminar by the Convenor of the seminar,
Dr. C.Praveen. Felicitation for the seminar was offered by Dr.Rajeswari, Asst.
Professor, Govt. CTE, Thycaud.
Technical Session-I
The first technical
session by Dr.Santhosh Areekkuzhiyil, Asst. Professor, Govt. Brennen College of Teacher
Education, Thalassery commenced immediately after the inaugural session. The focus of this interactive session was Gender and Society,
Gender Equality in Education and Analysis of the teaching-learning process from
a gender perspective.
Dr. Santhosh introduced participants to both Bio-social approach to Gender, and an evolutionary approach and dwelt with Gender difference, Gender similarity hypothesis
and Gender inequality in Education.
He drew
the attention of participants to Gender spaces of men and women, Gender roles,
Gender activities and the inclusion
of the role of women in the Malayalam and English text book of standard I
to V, prescribed for study in State schools in Kerala.
Dr. C.Praveen immediately after the tea break
screened two videos ‘Dividing the Mango’
and ‘Always Like a Girl’. The session
was quite interesting, and made
participants realize the need for promoting gender equality. Fr. Thomas Joseph,
M.Ed. student, Govt. CTE, thanked the Resource Person.
Technical
Session- II
Following lunch break, the
second session started at 1.45 p.m. This session was handled by Smt. Sheena
Jose, Asst. Professor in Malayalam, Govt. Institute of Advanced Study in
Education, Thrissur.
Preliminary observation on gender carried out by the Resource
Person were presented during the session. The participants were made to realize
that ‘Gender’ is one major issue among
many other sensitive issues and how gender issue is an integral part of
the socio economic political and cultural system.
The depiction of gender in
the Media, particularly Cinema, Television serials, and advertisements were presented and the opinions of the
participants on the same were sought. The session concluded with the screening
of a documentary on the
life of a transgender . The session helped refine the perspective of the participants towards gender. Ms.
Anupama, MEd student of Govt. CTE, Thiruvnanthapuram thanked
the Resource Person.

3-Gender, School and Society
Developing a gender perspective
through teacher education
necessarily requires a pedagogic
approach that allows not just systematic study of gender theory but also an engagement within their own position in society
vis-à-vis gender roles….Space need to be
provided within such courses to build teachers’ abilities to make linkages
between theory and real life situations…(P31-32)

the Faculty of Colleges of
Teacher Education on Emerging Concerns of Gender, School and Society( Aug
–Sep 2016) organized by NCERT, New
Delhi. These include:

gender and some associated concepts
*Gender and society
*Gender equality in Education: A perspective
*Analysis of
teaching learning process from a gender perspective
*Sharing of
researches carried out by the department of gender studies
*Awareness of
various programmes and schemes and other government initiatives for Girl’s education.
*Self defence
awareness
*Gender and media
*Understanding Transgender
*Constitutional
provisions and Rights of Children with respect to Education
*Action research in
the area of gender.

1.Blog Origin
The National
Council of Educational Research and
Training (NCERT) , New Delhi organized
a Capacity Building Programme for
the Faculty of Colleges of
Teacher Education on Emerging Concerns of Gender, School and Society in August
–September 2016.
The objective of
the programme included:
*To update the
understanding of the faculty
about some key concepts associated with gender;
*Equip the faculty
to carry out an exercise of analyzing teaching-learning materials from
a gender perspective;
*Facilitate the
faculty to analyze the existing value systems
of society from a gender
perspective to promote gender equality;
* To empower
the faculty to bring different aspects
into action.
The faculty who received training
were expected to disseminate the knowledge gained through
several modes including seminars
and workshops.
This Blog
entitled Gender Quest 2017 is being
launched on New Year Day- 2017.
